Coal Gasification Plant at Talcher

Under the scheme of revival of sick Fertilizer Units, RCF has been nominated by the Department of Fertilizers to be the lead partner to revive Fertilizer Corporation of India (FCI) Unit at Talcher, Orissa through Coal Gasification route as the feedstock for producing Urea. Considering the shortage of other feed stocks for fertilizer production like NG, LNG etc. from domestic sources and the abundance of coal in the country, it was decided that in place of natural gas, Coal shall be used as feedstock.

RCF, Coal India Limited (CIL), GAIL and FCIL have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to set up a fertilizer complex at Talcher.  It is proposed to set up a 3850 MTPD Urea and 2200 MTPD Ammonia plant along with Offsite facilities. JV Company “Talcher Fertilizers Limited” (TFL) has been incorporated. Selection of technology supplier and allocation of coal block is underway.

The estimated project cost is around Rs. 7,700 Crore. The project is likely to be commissioned by 2020.
